Fluoropolymer coatings are a family of high-performance industrial coatings based on fluorine-carbon chemistry. What Are Fluoropolymer Coatings?
Fluoropolymers are synthetic polymers where hydrogen atoms in the polymer chain are replaced with fluorine. The carbon-fluorine bond is one of the strongest in organic chemistry, which gives these coatings their defining characteristics: extreme chemical inertness, low surface energy (non-stick), wide operating temperature range and excellent electrical insulation.
In industrial applications, fluoropolymer coatings are applied to metal substrates — typically steel, stainless steel or aluminium — to create a protective surface that resists corrosion, prevents product adhesion, reduces friction and withstands aggressive chemicals and high temperatures.
Understanding the Brand Names
The fluoropolymer coating industry uses both generic chemical names and proprietary brand names. Here is how they map:

PTFE — The Workhorse
PTFE is the most widely used fluoropolymer coating in industry. It delivers the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid material, outstanding non-stick release and continuous service to 260°C. Applied as a thin film (25–35μm), it is the standard choice for bakeware, food processing equipment, packaging machinery and general industrial release applications. PTFE is FDA compliant for food contact when applied by a licensed applicator.

PFA — The Premium Option
PFA shares PTFE's temperature rating (260°C) but offers a thicker, non-porous film build (35–200μm) and superior chemical resistance. Unlike PTFE, PFA forms a true melt-flow coating that eliminates micro-porosity, making it the preferred choice for chemical processing vessels, pharmaceutical equipment and food environments exposed to aggressive CIP (clean-in-place) chemicals. It costs more than PTFE but delivers significantly better chemical barrier properties and longevity.
FEP — Clear and Versatile
FEP is a melt-processable fluoropolymer with a maximum continuous service temperature of 200°C. Its standout feature is that it can be applied as a clear, transparent coating — useful in applications where visual inspection of the substrate is needed. FEP has good chemical resistance and non-stick properties, though it falls short of PFA in both temperature rating and chemical performance.
ETFE (Tefzel) — Built Thick and Tough
ETFE is purpose-built for heavy-duty applications where abrasion resistance and thick film build are critical. Applied at 100–1800μm (0.1–1.8mm), it creates a substantial physical barrier against chemical attack and mechanical wear. Its maximum service temperature is lower at 150°C, but its abrasion resistance is far superior to the thinner fluoropolymers. ETFE is used on chemical storage tanks, exhaust ducting, pump housings and mining equipment.

ECTFE (Halar) — The Permeation Barrier
ECTFE (marketed as Halar by Solvay) offers the best permeation barrier of any fluoropolymer coating. Applied at 200–1800μm, it prevents chemicals from migrating through the coating to the substrate — critical in chemical processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and flue gas handling where even trace permeation is unacceptable. ECTFE also has excellent resistance to concentrated acids, alkalis and oxidising agents at temperatures up to 150°C.

How to Select the Right Fluoropolymer Coating
Coating selection follows a logical decision path. Work through these factors in order:
- 1Operating temperature — What is the maximum continuous temperature? Above 200°C eliminates FEP, ETFE and ECTFE. PTFE and PFA handle up to 260°C.
- 2Chemical exposure — What chemicals, concentrations and exposure durations are involved? Aggressive chemicals at high concentration point toward PFA, ETFE or ECTFE.
- 3Film build required — Do you need a thin release coat (PTFE at 25–35μm) or a heavy-duty barrier (ETFE/ECTFE at 1–2mm)?
- 4FDA food contact requirement — If the coating contacts food, PTFE, PFA and FEP are FDA compliant. ETFE and ECTFE are not typically used in direct food contact.
- 5Budget considerations — PTFE is the most cost-effective. PFA costs more but lasts longer in chemical environments. Thick-build ETFE and ECTFE carry higher material and application costs but provide years of service in harsh conditions.
