Industrial Non-Stick Coatings

AST provides industrial non-stick coating services using PTFE, PFA and FEP fluoropolymer systems from Chemours — the three low-friction, low-surface-energy coatings that define modern non-stick performance. Applied to bakeware, food processing equipment, rollers, moulds and OEM components requiring release, cleanability and reduced product adhesion.

AST's non-stick coating systems are manufactured PFOA-free and many are FDA compliant for direct food contact under 21 CFR 177.1550.

Non-stick coatings solve a specific class of operational problem — sticking, product carryover, difficult cleaning, torque loss on rotating equipment, and accelerated wear from forced release. Selecting the right non-stick system means matching the fluoropolymer (PTFE, PFA or FEP) to the operating temperature, cleaning regime, chemical exposure and expected service life.

PTFE

PTFE Non-Stick Coatings

PTFE is the default industrial non-stick coating. With the lowest coefficient of friction of any coating (0.04), it delivers the best release performance at the most economical cost. Used across bakeware, bakery equipment, dough handling, rollers and general release duty up to 260 °C continuous service.

  • Lowest coefficient of friction (0.04)
  • 260 °C continuous operating temperature
  • FDA compliant for direct food contact
  • Cost-effective for high-volume production
PFA

PFA Non-Stick Coatings

PFA delivers the same non-stick release as PTFE with added benefits — a nonporous melt-flow film, better permeation barrier and superior performance in demanding chemical environments. PFA is the premium choice for food contact equipment where regulatory or hygiene requirements demand the highest-performance coating.

  • Nonporous melt-flow film
  • Better chemical and permeation resistance than PTFE
  • FDA compliant premium food grade
  • Thicker builds available (up to 500 µm)
FEP

FEP Non-Stick Coatings

FEP is a melt-processable fluoropolymer that sits between PTFE and PFA in performance. FEP gives a nonporous film similar to PFA but at a lower cost, with a maximum continuous operating temperature of 200 °C. Good choice where a nonporous release surface is needed but peak temperatures and chemical challenge are moderate.

  • Nonporous film at a lower cost than PFA
  • 200 °C continuous operating temperature
  • Good release and low-friction behaviour
  • Suitable for moderate-temperature release duty

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a non-stick coating?
A non-stick coating is a low-surface-energy fluoropolymer film that prevents product adhesion, reduces friction and makes equipment easier to clean. Industrial non-stick coatings are based on PTFE, PFA or FEP — the three Chemours Teflon fluoropolymers — and are applied by spray to a wide range of substrates for food processing, bakeware, rollers, guides, moulds and OEM components.
Which non-stick coating has the best release performance?
PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any industrial coating (0.04) and delivers the best release performance of the fluoropolymers. It is the default non-stick coating for bakeware, bakery equipment, dough handling hardware and general release duty. PFA offers similar release with better chemical resistance and permeation barrier, making it the choice for more demanding service. FEP sits between the two with a nonporous film at a lower cost than PFA.
Are AST non-stick coatings food safe?
Yes. AST applies FDA-compliant Teflon grades suitable for direct food contact under 21 CFR 177.1550. All coatings are manufactured PFOA-free (since 2015) and are classified by the OECD as polymers of low concern. AST customers include major Australian and New Zealand food and bakery manufacturers including Goodman Fielder, George Weston Foods, Allied Pinnacle, ARYZTA, Fonterra and Saputo Dairy.
How thick is a non-stick coating?
Typical PTFE non-stick coatings range from 25 to 75 µm (one-coat systems) up to 205 µm for high-build primer + topcoat systems. PFA can be applied up to 500 µm for heavier-duty service. FEP is typically applied as a thinner film. AST selects the coating system and film build based on the operating conditions, cleaning regime and expected service life of the equipment.
How long do non-stick coatings last?
Properly applied PTFE and PFA coatings provide many years of reliable service. Service life depends on operating temperature, cleaning methods, mechanical wear and whether the equipment runs continuously or intermittently. AST provides a lifetime warranty on workmanship covering surface preparation, coating application and curing. Equipment is typically recoated on an as-needed basis when release performance degrades.
Can AST recoat existing non-stick equipment?
Yes. AST provides recoating services for bakeware, food processing equipment and industrial components. Existing coatings are removed by thermal burn-off and silica bead blasting, and a new coating system is applied to match the original specification — or upgraded to a different fluoropolymer where the operating conditions warrant it.
