If you have searched whether Teflon is a “PFAS,” whether PTFE is safe, or whether it is still legal to use on food equipment in Australia, you have almost certainly found conflicting answers. Here is the honest one: a genuine, food-grade fluoropolymer coating that is applied and cured correctly is inert, FDA-compliant and safe for food contact. The risk has never really been the material — it is a coating job that cannot be verified. Is Teflon (PTFE) a PFAS?
Technically, yes — and it helps no one to pretend otherwise. Cured fluoropolymers such as PTFE, PFA, FEP and ETFE fall within the very broad chemical-class definition of PFAS. But that class spans two very different things, and the distinction is the whole point:
The cured fluoropolymer film
A high-molecular-weight, inert, non-mobile solid plastic. It does not dissolve, does not migrate into food and does not break down under normal operating temperatures. This is what is on your equipment.
Long-chain PFAS additives
Substances such as PFOA and PFOS — small, mobile molecules linked to health and environmental concerns. These are what regulations target. They are not the finished coating.
So “is Teflon a PFAS?” is the wrong question to stop on. The question that matters for your food or process equipment is whether the film on the part is a genuine, fully-cured fluoropolymer — because that is what determines whether it behaves as the inert, food-safe material it is supposed to be.
Is It Food-Safe and FDA Approved?
Genuine Chemours PTFE, PFA and FEP coatings comply with the US FDA's food-contact regulation, 21 CFR §177.1550 (perfluorocarbon resins). But read the wording of any FDA-compliance statement carefully: compliance applies to the coating system when it is applied and cured to the manufacturer's specification. That conditional clause is not fine print — it is the entire basis of the compliance.
FDA food-grade status describes a material system applied correctly — not a label that travels with any coating that happens to look non-stick. The same resin, applied outside its specified parameters, is no longer covered by that compliance. Food-grade is something you achieve in application, not something you simply buy.
Why the Application — Not Just the Material — Decides Safety
A fluoropolymer coating only becomes the inert, food-safe, durable film the datasheet describes if every step of the process is done to specification. Get any of these wrong and the finished film can fail to coalesce, retain solvents, delaminate or lose the properties that made it safe and compliant in the first place:
Genuine raw material
The coating must be a genuine Chemours formulation, sourced through the licensed channel. Grey-market or generic “PTFE-type” product of unknown origin carries no valid food-contact compliance, whatever it looks like once sprayed.
Correct cure profile
The film must reach the specified peak metal temperature for the specified time. Under-curing leaves a film that is not fully coalesced and not fully inert. You cannot see this by eye; it has to be controlled and recorded.
Correct film thickness and build
Too thin or too thick and the coating will not perform or release as intended, and may not meet the compliant specification.
Proper substrate preparation
Grit-blasting and priming to specification, on a clean, uncontaminated substrate, so the film adheres and lasts rather than lifting into product.
This is why an unverified coating job is the real hazard — not the fluoropolymer itself. A perfectly good, food-grade material can be turned into a non-compliant, unsafe coating by a cure that was never measured, a thickness that was never checked, or a drum of product no one can trace. If it was not documented, it cannot be proven — and in a food or pharmaceutical audit, what cannot be proven cannot be relied on.
PFOA-Free and Compliant with Australian PFAS Rules
Two facts that address the questions food and process manufacturers ask most often:
PFOA-free
Chemours fluoropolymers have been manufactured without PFOA for over a decade, following the US EPA PFOA Stewardship Program. In a genuine coating applied by a licensed applicator, PFOA is not present in the finished film.
IChEMS-compliant
